This places are long time on our must go list The South Island is even more stunning and has better weather: I doubt you will get an objective answer on this forum. We are all fairly parochial when it comes to our home country. From photos I've seen of Patagonia the scenery is stunning , and the Andes would make the Southern alps look like a range of foothills.
However, as you are already going to Chile and Argentina , if you do decide to visit Godzone you can come back and give us an unbiased opinion. We were fortunate to have excellent weather in Feb.
While the mountains don't have the elevation and dramatic peaks that the mountains of Patagonia have, they still have a lot of 'wow factor' e. Fjordland, Mount Cook, Tongariro and NZ offers up a continuous array of spectacular scenery and hiking opportunities everywhere you go.
Our trip to Patagonia involved a lot of driving between destinations - with not a lot of visual impact until you reached the highlights We were planning trip to chile to see same but went to Peru instead as all the people who we spoke to who went to Chile all experienced bad weather and werent able to see or enjoy the mountain sights in Chile. Hopefully, there is some nice days at the end of December and beginning of January, also we plan some extra days, so should be ok: I've travelled quite a bit through Chile and Argentina.
Had glorious weather for the month or so we were camping in Chile - pretty dismal in Argentina in Dec. Yes, there are stunning landscapes, but as mentioned above, some large areas of mediocre scenery between the highs. In the South Island you can drive 4 hours and travel through 4 distinctly different terrain, all with wow moments.
